Microsoft, in its quest to rescue the dwindling popularity of the Internet Explorer, has announced some changes in its policies. Post these changes, which are most likely to come into effect from Jan 12, 2016, Microsoft will only provide browser help for the latest IE browser. It will also provide security patches for the same. The policy has received mixed reactions from the industry. One section of consumers does not really care about these changes made by Microsoft. These consumers are currently using IE on their computer and get it automatically upgraded to the latest version as soon as it is available. So they do not really care what Microsoft does on this front because they will be having the latest browser, thanks to automatic up gradation facility that Microsoft gives.
He other section who has been using the older versions of IE
for their internal business activities are a worried lot. The most critical
thing to observe here is the policy regarding the "Supported"operating
system partition. If the OS is less than 10 years old, then it falls under the
Microsoft's "Extended support" for the product's life cycle. This
means if your Operating system is more than 10 years old, Microsoft will not provide
any internet browser help to you. This means organizations will have to ensure
that they have got every one of the security patch that is made available.
The latest IE that will hit the market will follow this
policy which means, the life cycle of this browser is same as that of the
operating system in which it is installed. Microsoft has started issuing
updates for its operating system biannually and this means the browser will
also receive updates. The message is crisp and clear. All those IT firms and
the consumers, who have turned off their automatic update service on their
computers, will have to turn it back on. This is not possible for all the IT
companies to do and hence they will need some sort of internet browser support
from time to time.
The policy might also work in the opposite direction, with
consumers choosing to opt for a different browser like chrome or Firefox for
their browsing. It remains to be seen how Microsoft aims to tackle this issue.
The simpler issues like deleting cookies and cache can be dealt with the
consumer himself; however, four major issues one will need internet browser
help from the parent company.
This policy will spell doom for some and will have no effect
on others. It is advisable to go for the latest version since your browser's
security is of paramount importance to you. The latest patches that Microsoft
will provide will only be applicable to the latest browser which means your
security will not be compromised. A company has also the option of hiring
external support services. It is totally up to you as to what you want to do.
You can either play by the rules that Microsoft has laid down or you can go for
an alternate option of taking service from outside. They both have their own
advantages and disadvantages, so chose wisely.
